WHAT WE DO IN LOS ANGELES COUNTY

Our Los Angeles office provides foster care and adoption, as well as a transitional housing plus foster care program, for children and youth in Los Angeles County.

Foster Care and Adoption

Our foster care and adoption program specializes in providing stable family environments for sibling groups, infants and children with developmental disabilities, as well as youth who identify as LGBTQ. Through our program, foster and adoptive families receive in-depth training and ongoing support to help children heal and thrive. Last year, Walden matched 142 children and youth with foster families in Los Angeles County.

Transitional Housing Plus Foster Care Program

In 2015, Walden also expanded its transitional housing plus foster care program to Los Angeles County. Through the program, young adults ages 18 to 21 opt to remain in foster care, and are provided with stable housing and an opportunity to gain the education, life skills and employment experience necessary to successfully transition to adulthood and community life. By year’s end, Walden was serving 24 foster youth, and was seeking residences for 13 more who had been accepted to the program.

SPECIAL MESSAGE

Young adults, especially those 18-21, transitioning out of foster care need us now more than ever. And we need you.

Recent news coverage and the numbers from the Greater LA Homeless Count tell a harrowing story for LA County’s transition-aged youth.

  • At least 29% of the more than 4,000 young people homeless in LA on any given night are current or former foster youth.
  • Some 6,700 young people became homeless in LA county in 2018 – an inflow rate even higher than for adults.

As a trusted DCFS partner, we are heartened by recent County Board measures that recognize the urgent needs of transition-age youth. Yet, we know there is so much more to be done and done quickly and safely.

The numbers don’t lie, but don’t let them be the whole story. Help us ramp up our capacity to help provide safe housing and supportive services.

Help us help those youth who have – and those who might otherwise – fall through holes in society’s safety net. They deserve the opportunity to write their own story,  apart from the statistics.
